Average Steps Per Day by Age, Sex, and Country
The headline number: the typical adult averages roughly 4,000–5,000 steps a day, and that figure declines steadily with age. It's a long way below the 10,000 everyone quotes, and that's not a measurement error — most people simply don't walk that much.
One caveat that belongs before the data, not after it: how you measure changes the answer. Smartphone-based studies capture only the steps you take while carrying your phone, so they systematically undercount — the phone is on the desk, in a bag, charging in the kitchen. Research-grade accelerometers worn on the hip or wrist for all waking hours usually produce higher totals for the same population, sometimes by a thousand steps or more. When you compare two "average steps per day" figures, check what was strapped to whom before you conclude anything.

Average steps per day by age
Step counts peak in early adulthood and fall from there, with the sharpest drop after about 70. The ranges below are the pattern that shows up consistently across large device-measured studies.

Read these as approximate ranges synthesized across multiple studies, not as a single authoritative dataset. No one source produced this table. Different studies use different devices, different countries, different years and different definitions of a valid wear-day, and their published numbers disagree — sometimes by a lot. What they agree on is the shape: a gentle slope through middle age, a steeper one after retirement age. Treat the ranges as a sanity check on where you sit, not as a score.
Worth noting: the decline with age is not purely biological. Retirement removes the commute, which for many desk workers is a surprisingly large share of daily steps. Mobility limitations matter too, but so does the simple disappearance of the walk to the train.
Men vs women
Multiple large studies find that men average modestly more steps per day than women — commonly a few hundred steps, occasionally closer to a thousand. It's a real and repeatable difference, but it is small compared with the age effect. A 30-year-old woman almost always out-walks a 70-year-old man on average; sex shifts the number by a nudge, age shifts it by a bracket.
The gap also isn't constant. It varies noticeably by country, and in some populations it narrows to near zero. Where it's widest, the explanations proposed tend to be social and structural — differences in occupation, caregiving time, and how safe or practical it is to walk alone — rather than physiological. Any single-number "men walk X more than women" claim is flattening a lot of variation.
By country
The best-known cross-country comparison is a 2017 study led by researchers at Stanford (Althoff et al., published in Nature), which analysed smartphone step data from roughly 700,000 people across more than 100 countries. It remains the most-cited source on national step averages, and its overall figure — about 5,000 steps per day worldwide — is where the "global average" number most people repeat comes from.
Its rough findings:
- Near the top: Hong Kong and mainland China, around 6,000 or more steps per day.
- Middle of the pack: the United States, around 4,700. Most of Western Europe landed in a similar band or a little higher.
- Near the bottom: Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, around 3,500 or below.
Two things to hold onto. First, these are phone-carried steps — the study measured what people's smartphones recorded, so the absolute values run low and countries with different phone-carrying habits aren't perfectly comparable. Second, the study's most interesting finding wasn't the ranking at all. It was activity inequality: the spread between the most and least active people within a country predicted obesity rates better than the country's average did. A country where everyone walks a moderate amount looks healthier than one with the same average split between very active and very sedentary halves.
Why your number probably looks different
If your own average doesn't match the table, that's expected. The main reasons:
- Measurement method. The single biggest factor. A phone counts steps only while it's on you; a wrist tracker counts nearly all waking hours and also picks up arm movement that isn't walking. Hip-worn research accelerometers land somewhere in between and are the closest thing to a gold standard. Switching devices can change your "average" by 15–25% without you changing your behaviour at all.
- Where you carry it. Pocket and wrist give different totals. Bag or backpack gives lower ones. If you push a stroller or a shopping cart, a wrist tracker may miss a chunk of real walking.
- Job type. This dominates everything else. A nurse, warehouse worker, teacher or server can clear 10,000 steps before dinner without deliberately exercising. A desk worker who drives to the office may struggle to reach 3,000 on a workday. Comparing the two tells you about their jobs, not their fitness.
- Where you live. Dense, walkable, transit-heavy cities produce far higher averages than car-dependent suburbs, because in one place the errand is a walk and in the other it's a drive. This is most of the between-country difference, not national willpower.
- Weather and season. Step counts swing meaningfully across the year in places with real winters or extreme summer heat. A study run in July and one run in January will disagree about the same population.
Is being "average" good enough?
Average is a description, not a recommendation. Most national averages sit below the level at which the measurable health benefits of walking start to flatten out — so matching the average means landing on the steep part of the curve, where each extra thousand steps still buys a lot.

How to move up a bracket
Going from one row of that table to the next is usually 1,000–1,500 extra steps a day, which is about ten to fifteen minutes of walking. Practical ways to find it:
- Move one recurring trip off wheels. One regular errand converted from drive to walk beats an ambitious plan you'll abandon. It repeats itself weekly with no willpower after the first time.
- Get off one stop early. If you take transit, this is a free 800–1,500 steps a day and requires deciding once, not daily.
- Walk while you're already doing something. Phone calls, podcasts, thinking through a problem. The walk stops competing with your time and starts sharing it.
- Add a fixed post-meal loop. Ten minutes after lunch or dinner is the easiest slot to defend, and it's the one people actually keep for years.

Methodology and limitations
Because this page exists to be quoted, here's what it's built on and where it's weak:
- Self-reported vs device-measured. Surveys that ask people how much they walk consistently produce higher numbers than devices do. Every figure on this page comes from device-measured research; if you find a much rosier statistic elsewhere, check whether anyone was actually counting.
- Smartphone studies are biased samples. The Stanford dataset — and any phone-based study — covers people who own a smartphone, installed a fitness app, and carry the device around. That skews younger, wealthier, more urban and more health-interested than the general population, in every country included. It also means national comparisons partly reflect national phone habits.
- Devices disagree with each other. Wrist, hip and phone sensors count differently, and even two wrist trackers won't match. There is no universal step.
- The ranges are synthesized, not sourced from one study. The age table above is a consensus band drawn across multiple datasets. It's meant to be honest about spread rather than precise, which is why it gives ranges and no decimals.
- Numbers move year to year. Averages shifted measurably during and after the pandemic years, and they continue to drift with remote work, transit use and device adoption. Any figure here is a snapshot, not a constant.
